VIDEO RELAY SERVICE (VRS)
Video Relay Service (VRS) is a form of Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) that enables people with hearing disabilities who use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with hearing voice telephone users via video equipment, rather than via typed text. The video equipment (along with a high speed Internet connection) links the deaf user with a VRS operator - an ASL interpreter - so that the deaf user and the interpreter can see and communicate with each other in signed conversation. The VRS operator then contacts the hearing user via a standard phone line. The VRS operator relays the conversation back and forth between the two parties -- in sign language with the deaf user, and by voice with the called party. Because the conversation between the deaf user and the VRS operator flows much more quickly than with a text-based TRS call, VRS has become an enormously popular form of communication service for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
VIDEO REMOTE INTERPRETING (VRI)
Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) uses internet video connections to access sign language interpreting services without an interpreter on site. Instead of having an interpreter physically present with the deaf and hearing parties, the interpreter is located at a remote location. Video Remote Interpreting can be used in a variety of situations: Staff meetings, Medical (routine appointments, counseling, pediatrics), Employment (interviews, training, staff meetings), Education, Legal (court room, intakes, police, probation, juvenile, attorney-client), Government (federal, state and local), and Social Services.
Go Electronic carries video cameras for both the hearing impaired and the VRS/VRI providers:
